Guide to Masseter Botox

Your guide to masseter Botox and how it can improve a prominent jawline, headaches, tooth aches and ear pain from teeth grinding. Here’s how your masseter Botox works.

What is Masseter Botox?

Masseter Botox is a non-surgical treatment that injects Botox into the masseter muscles in the lower jaw. The masseter muscles are the muscles on either side of your face. They become visible when you clench your jaw. Injecting Botox blocks the nerves that tell the muscles to move. This relaxes the muscles and limits their movement. The patient is still able to chew but the jaw shrinks in size from reduced activity.

What Does Masseter Botox Treat?

There are several reasons that a patient may choose Botox. It can slim down a square or prominent jawline, reduce teeth grinding (bruxism), and reduce the pain associated with teeth grinding.

Its important to understand that if your jaw is square due to your bone structure, Botox won’t help. This treatment is only for overactive masseter muscles that create a square or prominent jaw.

What to Expect

The treatment is quick. It’s a same day procedure that doesn’t require any special preparation. Your first steps are to schedule a consultation with a provider. After an exam and discussion of your medical history, the provider asks about your reason for wanting the procedure and decides if its right for you.

After your consultation, you can begin treatment, which only takes a few minutes. First, the provider cleans the area and marks the area between your cheekbone and your lower jawbone on both sides. Then, he injects Botox in the target area. The amount of Botox you need depends on the size of your masseters and the issue being treated.

After your injections, the provider massages the area to help settle the Botox and minimize swelling and bruising.
